Santa Cruz: Nature, Science & Island Life

Santa Cruz holds a special place within the archipelago. Its main town, Puerto Ayora, combines the daily life of an island community with access to some of the Galápagos’ best-known natural sites.

The island also serves as an important hub for exploring other destinations in the archipelago. Land and water excursions depart from here, while the highlands offer a landscape completely different from that of the coast.

Did You Know?

Santa Cruz is closely connected to one of the most remarkable conservation stories in the Galápagos: Lonesome George, the last known giant tortoise from Pinta Island. His story began far from Santa Cruz, but eventually brought him to the Charles Darwin Research Station in Puerto Ayora, where he became one of the most recognized animals in the history of the archipelago. When George was found in 1971, scientists realized that he was believed to be the last surviving member of his species. He was taken to Santa Cruz with hopes that a suitable mate could be found and that his lineage could continue. Researchers spent decades searching for a reproductive solution, including attempts to pair him with females from closely related populations. Despite these efforts, George never produced offspring carrying the genetic lineage of Pinta Island.

He lived under careful observation at the research station until his death on June 24, 2012. At the time, he was estimated to be more than 100 years old. His death marked the disappearance of an entire evolutionary lineage and transformed him into an international symbol of the conservation challenges facing island species. But here is what makes his story even more fascinating: Lonesome George was not simply a famous tortoise. He represented an entire island that had lost its native giant tortoise population. His existence allowed scientists to study, document, and better understand a species that was already on the edge of extinction. Today, Santa Cruz continues to play an important role in giant tortoise conservation. Research, breeding, habitat restoration, and population monitoring remain part of broader efforts to protect these extraordinary animals across the Galápagos.

And when you visit the island, you are not simply seeing giant tortoises—you are stepping into a place where one of the world’s most famous conservation stories actually unfolded.

Essential Guide to Santa Cruz

1. Book your island excursions early. Some boat trips to Pinzón, Santa Fé, Plazas, Seymour, or Bartolomé operate on specific days and depend on availability.

2. Prepare for land and water activities. Comfortable shoes, swimwear, sunscreen, a hat, and a change of clothes are useful for hiking, cycling, beach visits, and snorkeling.

3. Allow time for island transfers. Trips between Baltra, Puerto Ayora, and other islands involve boat or ferry connections, so keep your schedule flexible and follow the indicated meeting times.

4. Explore Santa Cruz’s highlands. Places such as El Chato, the Twin Craters, and the volcanic tunnels offer a different setting from the island’s beaches and coastal areas.

5. Follow wildlife guidelines. Keep a safe distance from animals, never feed or touch them, and stay on authorized trails during visits and guided excursions.

6. Bring your snorkeling essentials. Many itineraries include snorkeling equipment, but carrying your own reusable water bottle, towel, and waterproof bag can make your aquatic activities more comfortable.
